Knowing how to clean your vertical blinds regularly is a must if you want to keep them looking brand new.
Dusting Vertical Blind
The first step to keeping your blinds clean is to dust it. You should do this at least once a week to minimize having to clean it thoroughly.
Use a feather duster instead of a rag to lift off dust from the blinds. Start dusting at the top going to the bottom. Repeat for every slat. Clean off dust from the duster when it’s already dirty before continuing.
Vacuum Cleaning Vertical Blinds
When the blinds are too dusty, you will need to use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment. It is best and recommended to clean the blinds while they are still attached to the main track. Taking them down would increase the risk of damage.
To start, gently vacuum each vertical slat from top to bottom. Afterwards, run it with a lamb’s wool duster instead of a feather duster, also from top to bottom.
Spot Cleaning Vertical Blinds
If there are dust and residue that are hard to remove, use a rubber dry cleaning sponge.
You can also spray a cleaning solution onto a dry cloth and rub it on the spot carefully. Rinse by rubbing a clean wet cloth on the area. Don’t spray any cleaning solution directly on the blind slats.
Washing Vertical Blinds
For a deep cleaning of the blinds, you can wash it with a mild soap, detergent or cleaning solutions made for blinds. Before washing, place a protective plastic sheet at the bottom of the blinds.
Prepare two buckets: one filled with warm water and soap or detergent, the other is filled with clean cool water.
Dip a sponge, blind cleaning brush or mitten onto the bucket with soap. A blind cleaning brush has a double sponge, which allows you to clean both sides of the slat at the same time. This is available in hardware stores or online. You can still use an ordinary sponge or a mitten though, and clean both sides separately.
After dipping, place the slat in between the special cleaning brush and the slide it from the top to the bottom. Repeat the process on the other slats. Rinse the brush in the clean bucket every so often before continuing.
After washing, leave the blinds to dry completing or you can wipe it with a clean cloth or towel.
Removing and Washing Fabric Blinds
If you prefer, you can dismantle the fabric blinds from the track before washing. Just make sure you mark the blinds to know where they’re facing and to remember their order.
You can wash the fabric slats outdoors or in your bathtub. Just make sure that they won’t be crumpled, bent or damaged. Wash the slats carefully with mild soap, rinse with water and dry with a soft towel.
